Overview

Obstetric care is a dynamic and continuously evolving area of nursing practice that focuses on ensuring the health and safety of women and newborns throughout pregnancy, labour, childbirth, and the postpartum period. Advances in clinical knowledge, technology, evidence-based interventions, and maternal healthcare practices have significantly improved the quality of obstetric care. However, complications such as postpartum haemorrhage, preeclampsia and eclampsia, maternal sepsis, obstructed labour, and fetal distress continue to require prompt recognition and effective management. The workshop “Contemporary Approaches to Obstetric Care: An Evidence-Based Workshop” aims to enhance the knowledge, clinical skills, critical thinking, and decision-making abilities of B.Sc. Nursing students. It emphasizes current evidence-based practices, early identification of complications, timely interventions, respectful maternity care, effective communication, and multidisciplinary collaboration.

The workshop is important because it bridges the gap between theoretical learning and clinical practice. Through interactive teaching, case discussions, demonstrations, and simulation-based activities, students can develop confidence in managing common obstetric situations and emergencies. It also promotes safe, woman-centred, and quality maternity care. Strengthening these competencies will prepare nursing students to contribute effectively to preventing maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality and to provide competent, compassionate, and evidence-based obstetric nursing care.

Objectives of Event

The Objectives of the Workshop aims:

®   To explain contemporary and evidence-based approaches to obstetric care. (SDG 4)

®   To identify early signs and symptoms of common obstetric complications and emergencies. (SDG 4)

®   To demonstrate appropriate nursing interventions for selected obstetric emergencies. (SDG 4)

®   To apply critical thinking and clinical decision-making skills in obstetric situations. (SDG 4)

®   To practice safe, respectful, woman-centred, and evidence-based obstetric nursing care. (SDG 3)
