Overview

The School of Business Studies, Sharda University, organised a guest lecture titled “Can Businesses Afford to Be Unethical? An Economic Perspective” for BBA students specialising in Economics and International Business. The session aimed to highlight the relationship between business ethics, economic decision-making, profitability, and long-term sustainability.

The lecture focused on how unethical business practices, although sometimes associated with short-term financial gains, can result in substantial economic costs in the long run. These costs may include reputational damage, loss of customer trust, legal penalties, employee dissatisfaction, and declining market competitiveness. The session also highlighted the importance of ethical leadership, corporate governance, transparency, and accountability in building successful and sustainable businesses.

Through practical examples and discussions on real-world business scenarios, students were encouraged to examine the economic consequences of unethical decisions and understand the importance of balancing profit maximisation with social responsibility. The discussion also connected ethical business practices with international business operations, where trust, compliance, and cultural sensitivity are essential for maintaining global partnerships.

The session provided students with valuable insights into the role of ethics in modern business and encouraged them to adopt a responsible, analytical, and sustainable approach to managerial decision-making. It reinforced the understanding that ethical business practices are not merely a moral obligation but also an important investment in long-term economic success.
